The quality standard
The wild reindeers i Norway are exposed to increasing habitat fragmentation, human disturbance, and various diseases.
Norway has therefore established a national quality standard for wild reindeer providing a standardized assessment of population status, grazing resources, and human impact. For areas not meeting the quality standard, action plans are to be developed to secure long‑term viability of wild reindeer populations.
Chronic wasting disease
CWD was first detected in wild reindeer in Norway in 2016. During 2017 and 2018 over 2,000 reindeer were culled in order to limit, and if possible, eradicate CWD. Now, eight years later, a plan has been made to restock the area with wild reindeer.
